:

We are seeking a R&D Mechanical Engineer with a focused background in computational solid mechanics. Your work will involve developing constitutive theory and the software tools to model material inelasticity and damage evolution up to and including failure. Products of the research are expected to be published in peer reviewed journals and capability tools produced are expected to include user and theoretical documentation.

Additional topical areas of study might include: finite element technology mesh adaptivity with state variable mapping regularized fracture/failure multiscale/multiphysics coupling contact mechanics and novel numerical methods. You will implement and verify models and methods in Sandia computer codes for high-performance computing simulations and explore the validity of these approaches in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and analysts. You will work within a collective teaming environment to participate and lead efforts vital to national security engineering challenges. You will be expected to develop new research avenues and find opportunities to develop engineering analysis tools needed to address these challenges.

Required:

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Civil Aerospace Engineering Mechanics or other applicable engineering field
  • Demonstrated educational or professional experience in computational solid mechanics
  • Ability to hold a US DOE Q clearance

Desired:

  • Postgraduate experience in computational mechanics research
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Experience in constitutive model development under large deformations
  • Fundamental understanding of the finite element method
  • Demonstrated experience publishing peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Proficiency in a software development environment

Department Description:

The Mechanics of Materials Department performs experimental and analytical studies to characterize and predict the thermal-mechanical behavior of materials from atoms to continuum specializing in fracture and failure. Our experimental work covers the spectrum of discovery to characterization to model validation. Motivated by observations we develop mathematical models to simulate material responses under various loading and environmental conditions. The fidelity of our models and simulations varies from atomic to continuum scales. We develop numerical methodologies so that our material models can be implemented in high-performance computing simulations. Our experimental capabilities include characterizing materials over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates developing micro- and nanoscale strain and displacement diagnostics and testing subsystems to support model validations.
