Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nations future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries 37 R&D 100 Awards and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division has a long tradition in strongly correlated electron physics both experimentally and theoretically. In conjunction with BNLs Computational Science Initiative and NSLS II and researchers at Stony Brook University it is leveraging this expertise to conduct investigations into the coherence and entanglement properties of many-body magnetic solid-state systems based on rare earths. These investigations will have two thrusts. In the first pulsed laser experimental modalities will be developed to probe the non-equilibrium properties of rare-earth based magnetic chain systems. These modalities will exploit the unusually long lifetimes present in such materials. In the second quantum computational modalities informed by quantum information theoretic approaches will be developed to describe the non-equilibrium dynamics of such rare-earth materials.
Position Description
The Neutron Scattering Group led by John Tranquada is currently soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to collaborate on studies of rare-earth based materials of potential interest for quantum information science. The project co-led by Igor Zaliznyak is part of a DOE-funded proposal in Quantum Information Science. It is aimed at developing novel pump-probe spectroscopies for interrogating the properties of rare-earth ions forming spin chains of various length. Development of the optical pumping techniques and neutron scattering experiments including laser-pump neutron-probe measurements will be carried out at national user facilities primarily at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and in collaboration with ORNL scientists. The project also includes close collaboration with other groups in the Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division and at NSLS-II.
Position Requirements
The role involves developing of an experimental setup for laser-pump neutron-probe spectroscopic measurements on time-of-flight neutron spectrometers at the SNS. The work includes designing and building optical pumping setups compatible with time-resolved neutron scattering instrumentation and sample environments planning and performance of neutron scattering experiments including data collection and analysis and writing up the results for publication all within a highly collaborative environment. There may be opportunities for crystal growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and build optical pumping setups for neutron scattering experiments
- Write proposals for experimental beam time
- Perform neutron scattering experiments at remote user facilities
- Analyze the resulting data
- Write up results for publication
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- PhD in Physics (or a closely related field) obtained within the last 5 years
- Demonstrated background in condensed-matter physics
- Positive attitude towards hands-on experimental work
- Good computer skills
- Interest in problem solving
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with scattering techniques
- Experience with laser spectroscopy and optical measurements
- Hands-on experience with some type of photon-based techniques and instrumentation
- Knowledge of quantum magnetism and some correlated-electron physics
- Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python IDL or Matlab
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
