Job Description:

Requisition Id6690

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Advanced Computing in Nuclear Particle and Astrophysics Group in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

In this role you will focus on state-of-the-art simulations for nuclear structure and reactions both performing and analyzing the results of simulations and developing the next generation of simulation code and analysis tools. You will work alongside a dedicated team of researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee along with other member institutions as a part of the multi-institutional nuclear computational low-energy initiative (NUCLEI see computingnuclei.org) and have the opportunity to share your results with the scientific community.

The successful candidates will be mentored by and teamed with staff in the Advanced Computing for Nuclear Particles and Astrophysics Group in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) and ORNLs Theoretical and Computational Physics Group as well as faculty at the University of Tennessee. Appointments will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year depending on performance and the availability of funding.

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. As an important part of the broader High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure the division also hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) a Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility. The OLCF has the charge to develop and apply transformational computational science capabilities in support of dramatic advances in our understanding of the physical world and using that knowledge to address the most pressing national and international concerns. It delivers leadership-class computing for science and engineering; focuses on grand-challenge science and engineering applications; procures largest-scale computer systems (beyond typical vendor design points) and develops high-end operational and application software; and educates and trains the next generation of computational scientists.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Work closely with ORNL researchers in using the resources of the OLCF effectively and efficiently including:

  • Conduct research present results at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Developing and porting of scalable science applications and algorithms for OLCF and other leadership computers.
  • Ensure compliance with environment safety health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computer Science Applied Mathematics or a related discipline completed within the last five years
  • A strong computational science background in Computer Science Applied Mathematics or related field
  • Deep understanding of application development techniques (programming models algorithms software) at scale (large processor counts)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with quantum many-body methods like coupled-cluster
  • Experience with common scientific programming languages such as Fortran and C++ as well as experience with GPU programming (e.g. CUDA HIP OpenCL OpenMP OpenACC) vectorization MPI and one-sided asynchronous programming models
  • Experience in heterogeneous computing developing and debugging massively parallel algorithms and code performance profiling
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journal
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
