Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) Computational Research Division has an opening for a Computational Physics Project Scientist/Engineer to join the team.
In this exciting role you will work in Berkeley Labs (LBNL) Physics and X-ray (PHAX)group in the Scientific Data Division. The PHAX group is a leader in computational physics research and software development for the next generation of Physics experiments. The LBNL ATLAS group has led core software development for the ATLAS experiment at CERN for two decades and plays a key role in algorithm design for detector simulation and pattern recognition with a particular focus on application frameworks and parallel algorithms targeting HPCs and ML models. The Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) is the international science collaboration that will make high accuracy measurements of fundamental cosmological parameters using data from the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The Project Scientist will contribute to ATLAS and LSST-DESC software development where they will have the opportunity to take technical leadership roles in one or more tasks. They will participate in existing R&D efforts notably the HEP-CCE and SCIDAC-4 HEP on HPC projects. Depending on their experience and interests they will have the opportunity to propose new R&D projects in collaboration with computational physicists data scientists and software engineers in the ATLAS experiment the Scientific Data and Physics Divisions ESnet and NERSC.
What You Will Do:
- Collaborate with computer scientists physicists and mathematicians at LBNL on the development of software for HEP experiments.
- Work on the optimization of several existing software pipelines in HEP experiments.
- Contribute to one or more of the ongoing projects within the group including gaining the requisite skills for the development of software for high-performance computing systems and the development of new algorithms and adaption of existing software for accelerators at heterogeneous system architectures.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Identify and contribute to scientific projects within ATLAS & LSST-DESC (e.g. data analyses) that require significant computing and assist in developing new workflows to assist these projects.
- Contribute to the effort in one or more software areas organizing the work across the collaboration.
- Contribute to projects centered on infrastructure for and applications of machine learning.
- Contribute to the research and development of software towards the HL-LHC.
- Identify and propose new research projects aligned with the group priorities.
What is Required:
- Bachelor or equivalent degree in computer science physics or related fields.
- At least two years of relevant experience.
- Experience with scientific software development in C/C++ and python
- Ability to communicate effectively and to contribute to a large software project.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.
Additional Desired Requirements:
- Experience with common HEP software (Geant4 Pythia8 MadGraph5_aMC@NLO ROOT etc).
- Experience with high-performance computing systems and software optimization.
- Experience with parallel programming methods for heterogeneous architectures (CUDA SYCL HIP Kokkos OpenMP OpenACC)
- Experience with parallel programming methods for distributed computing systems (Ray Dask HPX)
- Experience with machine learning applications and development.
Notes:
- This is a full-time 3 years term appointment with the possibility of extension based upon satisfactory job performance continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
