What You Will Do
The T-5 Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group of the Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral position in computational plasma physics.
The position is on the development of spectral methods for the kinetic equations in weakly collisional plasmas targeting problems that require coupling microscopic physics and macroscopic dynamics. Specifically the project involves the further development of the LANL Spectral Plasma Solver (SPS) framework. Several different research directions are envisioned including optimization of the spectral expansion use of artificial intelligence techniques application to exascale high-performance computing architectures development of efficient physics-based preconditioning techniques in conjunction with novel iterative solvers etc The main target of the project is global magnetospheric modeling although other space-physics applications such as the interaction of magnetospheric particle populations with plasma waves are also of interest.
Projects in the T-5 space physics team are supported by collaborations within T-5 (involving statisticians applied mathematicians and physicists) with other groups at Los Alamos (in particular the Intelligence and Space Research the Accelerator Operations and Technology and the Computer Computational and Statistical Science divisions) and with other groups within the US and internationally.
