What You Will Do
The T-5 Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics Group in the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a creative and resourceful postdoctoral researcher with strong computational skills and experience in machine learning seismic inversion and/or earthquake physics techniques. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join a multidisciplinary research team consisting of geophysicists machine learning experts and computational scientists to conduct cutting-edge physics-informed machine learning research for various challenging geophysical problems including seismic imaging inversion earthquake detection and characterization.
The research is expected to produce peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and top-tier conferences. The term of the appointment is 2 years with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability. Candidates may be also nominated for a Director's LANL Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie Richard P. Feynman J. Robert Oppenheimer or Frederick Reines LANL Distinguished Fellowships.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Solid background in seismic inverse theory (inversion and imaging) and/or earthquake physics (earthquake detection and characterization)
Strong computational and deep learning skills with practical experience in various neural network architectures (DNN CNN RNN/LSTM GAN or other autoencoders)
Practical experience with deep learning packages such as PyTorch TensorFlow Keras etc.
Code development and computational experience in using high-performance parallel computing resources
Solid publication record in high-impact journals top-tier machine learning and related conferences.
Excellent communication writing and oral presentation skills and
Strong programming skills with Python
Education: A Ph.D. in Geophysics Computer Sciences Applied Math Computational Sciences Electrical Engineering or closely related field is required. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within 5 years of completion of the Ph.D.
