Overview:

We are seeking a Quantum Computer Scientist who will focus on research and development activities that target languages compilers libraries and frameworks for heterogeneous quantum-classical computation. This position resides in the Beyond Moore Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team you will focus on the development design and deployment of a state-of-the-art software infrastructure for quantum-classical computation. You will be part of a larger team of researchers and software engineers developing compilation tools and next-generation quantum-classical programming languages and compilers and will focus on the robust efficient and timely deployment and maintenance of these complex software systems. The successful applicant will be at the cutting edge of quantum computer science research and lead in the deployment of software enabling typical heterogeneous quantum-classical computing tasks.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum computer programming and compilation
  • Design develop demonstrate and deploy novel software extensions to enable quantum compilation strategies.
  • Build and maintain continuous integration workflows spanning the typical development testing and package deployment pipeline.
  • Participate on the development of peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums

Basic Qualifications:

  • A M.Sc. in quantum information computer science computational chemistry physics or other related area nd 2+ years of relevant research experience or a Ph.D. and 0-2 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated background in advanced software engineering and continuous integration
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of programming languages and methods
  • Knowledge of LLVM Clang and MLIR
  • Knowledge of tools like Docker CMake and GitLab Continuous Integration workflows
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and multi-disciplinary teams of researchers
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever changing needs
