Job Description:

Job description Site Name: UK - Hertfordshire - Stevenage, USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Oct 22 2019 Computational Sciences is the center of excellence for in silico science across GSK R&D, with a focus on driving the cutting edge of predictive modeling and informatics in the discovery and development of medicines. The Computational Sciences team partners with other R&D lines to apply advanced in silico techniques to real world problems, seek and incubate new approaches, and develop in silico platforms of the future. The role of Head, Computational Sciences has a high-level responsibility to drive a “predict-first culture, where computational predictions drive experimental work in chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and toxicology, ultimately driving selection of the best molecule and the understanding of its biological interactions. Reporting in to the Head of Data and Computational Sciences, Eric Manas, the newly created VP of Computational Sciences role will lead a team of 70-80 professionals including five direct reports in the following disciplines: • Protein Design and Informatics • Molecular Design (comp chem & informatics) • Systems Modelling and Translational Biology • Computational Toxicology As well as providing scientific and technical leadership you will provide thought leadership to deliver and maintain a world class predictive sciences capability that supports scientists to rapidly generate testable hypotheses to identify and advance safe and efficacious molecules with shorter cycle times. State-of-the-art in silico approaches for biological target tractability, small molecule and biopharmaceutical screening and design, pharmacokinetics, systems pharmacology and toxicology will be emphasized and their impact assessed. Accountabilities Develop a vision and supporting business plan to drive the value and delivery of modeling from modality selection to design of the best molecule to the better understanding of all levels of its biological interaction. Enterprise leadership and impact pertaining to the discovery and understanding of therapeutic agents at the molecular and systems levels. Scientific leadership and impact, building on current efforts within the GSK medicinal chemistry, biopharm, safety and DMPK communities, extended to fully leverage our data (Discovery and Development) and technologies. Organisational leadership to support a culture that is readily able to identify credible opportunities for new areas of research collaborations, technology technologies and innovation, which includes educating the organization on the concepts of predictive modelling and their strategic potential. Build strong external engagement network and external presence for Computational Sciences via e.g. representing GSK at professional meetings, high impact publications. Identify opportunities for pre-competitive or strategic external partnerships that will enable GSK to operate at the pace of external technology development. Inspire and drive a culture of excellence and innovation in modelling and informatics that will attract talent and grow expertise to lead the industry in key areas of modeling capabilities that enable pipeline success. Science/Technical skills: PhD degree or equivalent in a STEM discipline or other relevant field. Recognized opinion leader in Computational Sciences applied to Medicine Discovery and Development. Deep expertise in one or more of the following: mathematical & statistical modelling, atomistic simulation, multiparameter optimisation, machine learning, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) modelling, systems/ODE modelling, chemical engineering. Track record of driving innovation in predictive technology. Understanding of state-of-the-art high-performance computing and its application to current scientific problems. Broad knowledge of scientific disciplines related to drug discovery and development, including biology, chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology. Organizational/political agility with the ability to drive large, cross-functional capability development programs involving coordination with multiple stakeholders. An intense passion for using modelling to drive new design paradigms and inform experiments. Sufficient, relevant modelling or simulation experience to discharge the duties of the role To Apply, please send your CV and Cover Letter by Wednesday 13th November If you require an accommodation or other assistance to apply for a job at GSK, please contact the GSK Service Centre at 1-877-694-7547 (US Toll Free) or +1 801 567 5155 (outside US).
