Position Description: A Staff Scientist position is available in the Cutaneous Microbiome and Inflammation Unit, Dermatology Branch, National institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). The laboratory combines computational and experimental methods to investigate human-associated microbes. We use translational genomics approaches to explore the relevance of microbes in human health and diseases, particularly of skin diseases. Examples of our work include Tirosh, Nature Medicine 2018; Byrd, Science Translational Medicine 2017; Oh, Byrd Cell 2016; and Oh, Nature 2014. The group collaborates extensively with genomicists, immunologists, and clinical teams to perform cutting-edge microbiome research. The Staff Scientist’s primary responsibilities will include performing computational data assessment including independent research; analyzing genomic, multi-‘omic, and clinical data; provide documentation for software and pipeline development to permit reproducibility and application to similar future studies; contribute to the production of data and methods for scientific publications and presentations; mentoring junior staff; and collaborating with NIAMS and other investigators. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or similar level of education and a minimum of 4 years of postdoctoral experience in designing bioinformatics and related experiments and expertise in appropriate programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Unix). The candidate must also have experience and qualifications using large genomic datasets and phenotypic/clinical datasets. Must have a proven positive and collaborative leadership style, effective interpersonal skills, technical knowledge, strong organization and planning skills, and strong English communication skills. Demonstrated publication record in applying bioinformatics skills to biomedical datasets is preferred.
