Summary: Our Investigative Toxicology and Pathology group in Preclinical Safety (PCS) has an opening for a Senior Scientist I in Lake County, IL. At AbbVie, PCS is responsible for all aspects of Toxicology, Pathology, and Comparative Medicine. We partner with Discovery teams to select and investigate new targets and lead molecules, and work with project teams to develop and execute non-clinical safety development plans that support projects from pre-IND through registration and post-marketing phases. We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with practical knowledge of machine learning (ML) methodologies and practices, especially when applied to drug toxicity safety assessment. You will work with a highly capable team to provide strategic leadership for PCS with regard to big data analyses and applying in silico methods to profile and assist in bioinformatic analysis of novel target interactions for preclinical investigative toxicology projects. Furthermore, the candidate will provide strategies and leadership for integrating and optimizing internal and external data to better understand and predict preclinical toxicities. Responsibilities: Provide strategic leadership for leveraging ML methodologies and utilizing internal/external data to champion new developments for computational assessment of toxicology. Create strategy and drive the integration and interrogation of large-scale data from preclinical studies to support new therapeutic discovery and development programs. Develop, maintain, and refine bioinformatics workflows and analytical tools for preclinical and translational data analysis. Oversee in silico off target safety screening strategies and ensure methodology remains up to date. Identify and develop platforms to analyze and work with omics data to improve and advance understanding of mechanisms of toxicity Collaborate with peers and cross-functional experts to rapidly advance agile, impactful, and cost-effective solutions. Present in internal group meetings or external scientific meetings. Publish key findings to advance the science of safety assessment. Qualifications: PhD in Toxicology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, or related field with evidence of strong training in utilizing big data to understand complex problems. Post-doctoral experience in drug safety or toxicology applying analytical tools to complex datasets. Ability to independently design and execute computational experiments, interpret data, and identify appropriate follow-up strategies. Passion for solving technical problems and applying new technologies to further scientific goals. Demonstrated ability in one or more programming languages like Python, Java or R Practical knowledge of ML methodologies and practices Knowledge of bioinformatics tools and resources, experience with next generation sequencing (NGS) data, various high-throughput omics analyses, and integrative omics data.
