GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Alzheimer's Clinical & Translational Research Unit (ACTRU) and Dr. Robert Kitchen (Cardiovascular Research Center) is seeking to hire a highly motivated and organized self-starter with research experience to join as a Research Technician for current federally funded projects and new initiatives. The Research Technician will participate in the analysis of protein biomarker data under the joint supervision of Dr. Carlyle and Dr. Kitchen, with the mentorship of Professor Arnold. Current projects include 1) automation of data processing and statistical modelling of novel cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers; 2) identification of novel cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trials from proteomic data. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The research technician will be primarily responsible for automation of data analysis pipeline and basic statistical analysis of ‘omic data. Responsibilities include: Running existing analysis pipelines in R and python Collaboration with Arnold Lab staff to assist Dr. Kitchen in further automating analysis pipelines Analysis of differential expression, linear modelling, and evaluating diagnostic performance of novel biomarkers Extracting data from electronic health records May perform independent literature searches Participate in weekly lab meetings and present data Careful documentation of analysis and data according to best practices; use of version control tools such as git All other duties, as assigned SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and have a strong motivation to learn Strong statistical, mathematical, or computational background Prior experience in a data analysis or scientific computing environment (ideally python or R) Familiarity with basic molecular biology principles Must have excellent interpersonal, speaking, and writing abilities Ability to manage work processes in a neat and orderly way, to follow instructions, and to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team Must be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks independently Sound degree of computer literacy required LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS: Certifications: Required: none Preferred: Good Clinical Practice CITI certification in protection of human subjects EDUCATION: Minimum required: Bachelor's Degree Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training: Statistics, mathematics, physics, or biology with a bioinformatics focus EXPERIENCE: Required: At least three- six months previous research experience (school coursework or internships specific to research can be considered experience). Preferred: Experience with supervised/unsupervised statistical modelling is preferred, however, while there is an emphasis on proteomics, direct previous experience in proteomic techniques/analysis is not required. WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent will have a desk and bench in the laboratory in Building 114 in the Charlestown Navy Yard that is equipped with a networked computer.
