The University of Virginia's Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Technology (VPAT) seeks a Research Computing Associate/Computational Scientist to join their team. The incumbent acts as a technical resource for University faculty and researchers, translating between scientific research needs and computing solutions for the UVa Research Computing team. The Research Computing Associate/Computational Scientist will develop computational solutions for research projects, as well as implement them and train users. The ideal candidate will: have a passion for providing high-quality services/enjoy supporting academic researchers, have a broad knowledge of computer science and IT trends in effectively applying that knowledge to UVA’s HPC environment, be a quick learner, enjoy technical problem solving and working on multiple projects simultaneously, have strong communication skills, and be a team player. In order to be successful, you must have extensive knowledge and research experience with bioinformatics and computational biology tools. Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline and at least three years of relevant experience that includes the below: Direct experience with R, Python, and/or Matlab programming for statistical data analysis and/or machine learning. Experience with Linux and a High-Performance Computing (HPC) platform. Preferred Education and Experience: An advanced degree in life science, engineering, or a related area is preferred. Experience with shell scripting and Linux software stack management (application layer). Familiarity with software container technology is a plus. Experience with SQL-based RDBMS system. Image analysis & visualization programming experience is a plus. User training experience in computational science, data science, or bioinformatics. Anticipated Hiring Range: $80,000 - $85,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
