Job Description:

The Fusion Energy Division (FED) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for a computational physics postdoctoral position. The FED conducts experimental, computational and theoretical research on the science and technology of fusion plasmas for the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Program in the Office of Science. In this position, the Postdoctoral Associate will be part of a computational study whose principal goal is to demonstrate a viable path for a steady-state mirror-based fusion neutron source using Radio-Frequency (RF) heating methods. Job Duties and Responsibilities: The postdoctoral member will be responsible for Upgrading existing hybrid Particle-In-Cell code (PIC). Performing computational studies of high-density mirror-confined plasmas with RF heating. Applying these models to assess linear and non-linear stability and transport of energetic ions and their associated neutron yield. Validate transport physics model with experimental observations from an existing device at ORNL. Contribute to the writing of technical reports based on results from the computational study. Be responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals. Work within a team to answer research questions and meet goals of the project. Qualifications Required: Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering or a closely related field. Theoretical/computational experience in any of the following areas: low temperature plasmas, linear plasma devices and or fusion plasmas. Demonstrated record of productive and creative research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations in scientific conferences. Cannot have received most recent degree more than 5 years prior to date of application. Must complete all degree requirements before starting appointment. Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience using PIC codes for plasma simulations. Demonstrated proficiency in C++, Fortran and MATLAB. Experience with parallel computing. Experience with advanced programming models MPI and openMP. Strong interest in high performance computing. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment. If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting@ornl.gov. ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify employer.
