What You Will Do

We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasma science, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, environmental sciences, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group is seeking one or more qualified candidates to hire as Post-Masters Students to work within our research teams on developing domain specific scientific software. Potential projects include research with the Amanzi-ATS team (https://amanzi.github.io/) and the ANSI team (https://lanl-ansi.github.io/). This Post-Masters Position is an educational opportunity for the selected candidate to both contribute to cutting-edge scientific research and to learn new skills and areas. Prior expertise in applied mathematics, plasma physics, environmental sciences, or energy systems is not required.

This position is open to recent master's degree graduates (within the past 3 years) who had a minimum GPA of 3.2 out of 4.0 on their graduate work.The position is for one to two years in length. Selected candidates will be paired with a mentoring team and will work closely with one or two of the scientific teams within T-5.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Experience with one or more of the following programming languages: Fortran, C++, Python, or Julia
• Experience with modern software development practices, which can include source code repositories, continuous integration testing, and portable build systems
• Ability to work within a collaborative team environment

Education/Experience: A Masters' Degree in computer science, applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or a related field within the past 3 years.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with scientific or data analysis software
• Experience with numerical algorithms
• Experience with parallel computing
• Experience with data visualization
• Experience with artificial intelligence, optimization, or machine learning
• Ability to get a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
