Job Description:

Overview: The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Computational Scientist to serve as a liaison between the OLCF and the users of the OLCF computing resources and OLCF vendor partners. In this role, you will provide deep technical expertise in high performance computing that can be applied to a diverse range of scientific disciplines. This position will reside in the Scientific Computing Group in the National Center for Computational Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Represent the needs of a broad range of application communities for OLCF planning and decision-making. Collaborate with other computational scientists to develop, integrate, port, and tune applications to take advantage of the capabilities of the OLCF leadership-computing environment. Participate in research proposals in computational science and computer science. Forge collaborations with other researchers, both internally at ORNL and externally, on topics of mutual interest. Conduct research and report results in journals, technical manuals, and conferences. Assist in capability planning exercises for future OLCF procurements. Provide expertise and leadership in current OLCF procurement activities. Participate in community-wide efforts to define the requirements for system software, libraries, and tools to meet the needs of the application users. Advise and work with OLCF systems, storage, and networking groups to understand the needs of computational scientists in a broad range of domains. Participate directly in formulating policies to maximize scientific productivity of the OLCF compute resources. Work closely with OLCF users to assist them in using the resources of the OLCF effectively and efficiently: Collaborate scientifically with awarded OLCF projects. Participate in developing, porting, and scaling applications and algorithms for OLCF computers. Assist in debugging and tuning applications. Assist users in moving data and programs into and out of the OLCF environment and help with scheduling applications at scale to meet the scientific needs of the users. Collaborate with OLCF user assistance consultants and systems administrators to ensure that OLCF user needs are met. Basic Requirements: A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, or scientific discipline (e.g. astrophysics, biophysics, chemistry, climate science, engineering, materials science, nuclear and particle physics, plasma physics, etc.). Minimum of 2 years of experience in applied mathematics, computer science, or a specific scientific discipline with demonstrated experience developing application codes and/or libraries for high performance computing resources. Experience with numerical methods, parallel algorithms, MPI, and a common scientific computing programming language (i.e., Fortran, C, and/or C++). Parallel software development on large-scale computational resources. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with one or more prominent simulation codes or libraries that use the Leadership Computing Facilities. Experience in a domain aligned with US DOE Office of Science mission areas. Experience with multiple common scientific computing programming languages and programming models. Experience with computing at scale is desired (for example, computing on a resource in the top 20 of the Top500 list). Knowledge of the entire software stack on a leadership computing platform, including compilers and runtime systems. The ability to work in a dynamic, team environment is required. Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation are necessary. Relocation: Moving is stressful and expensive, and UT Battelle offers a wide range of relocation benefits for individuals and families to make it easier to come and work here.
