Job Description:

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has a new opening for a Computational research Scientist. This position will take on a leadership role in an effort to develop efficient specialized architecture with the appropriate support by the software stack to enable integration of novel computational accelerators for future extremely heterogeneous HPC systems. What You Will Do: Design and implement specialized architectures of different scale and their integration into future heterogeneous HPC ecosystem. Work closely with the domain scientists for deep understanding of the computational needs and current bottlenecks in existing HPC systems to be able to overcome these limitations. Work closely with the programming language and compiler developers to provide full support and integration of the novel accelerators into HPC software environment. Collaborate with domain scientists to plan on potential integration of the specialized architectures for a broader use case. Participate in all requested assignments, including research, preparation of proposals, documentation of results and reporting results to sponsors. What is Required: PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline with at least 3 years of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with a strong background in computational methods and scientific computing. Demonstrated expertise in working with modeling and simulation methods and software tools for hardware exploration. Demonstrated expertise in Verilog, C++, Scala and Python. Leading edge knowledge and research expertise in computer architecture design. Familiarity with HPC and scientific computing applications. Familiarity with parallel programming concepts (languages, approaches, compilers, schedulers). Familiarity with low-level programming (assembly languages, ISAs). Familiarity with novel computing paradigms (quantum computing, neural networks). The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full-time, 3 year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
