The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group (T-5) of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a research position in computational imaging. The ideal candidate for this position is a highly-motivated, creative, and resourceful researcher with strong computational skills and experience in imaging inverse problems (e.g. tomography, ptychography, phase retrieval for coherent imaging, etc.). The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team consisting of electrical engineers, applied mathematicians, physicists, computational scientists, and domain experts to contribute to our research in developing novel mathematics and algorithms to address some of the unique imaging inverse problems associated with the numerous scientific imaging programs that we need to solve at LANL and at DOE experimental user facilities in general. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills and career stage of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Scientist 2 $91,800- $151,400 The successful candidate will: Lead independent research in computational imaging applied to imaging inverse problems associated with numerous DOE scientific imaging programs Publish research in leading scientific journals Recruit and mentor students and postdocs Work in a team environment to solve problems in support of Laboratory missions Scientist 3 $110,400 - $186,300 In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to: Lead and guide inter-disciplinary teams, possibly encompassing both theorists and experimentalists, to develop new theoretical and computational tools for inferring material and geometric properties Recruit and mentor junior staff Provide leadership in preparing proposals that guide future research directions of the group What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Strong background in signal processing, imaging inverse problems, and computational imaging in particular Experience in the use of deep learning methods for imaging inverse problems Experience in tomographic inversion and techniques for treating scatter and poly-energetic effectsSignificant programming experience and software development skills, in Python in particular Demonstrated research ability, as evidenced by publications, reports, presentations, awards, etc Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: 5+ years of relevant R&D experience Demonstrated ability to lead projects and research teams in broad areas of expertise in computational imaging International reputation in relevant area of expertise as demonstrated by publications, invited presentations, professional service and/or professional honors Ability to recruit and mentor junior staff. Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor, Masters, or Doctorate's Degree in Science from an accredited college or university. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications: Experience with numerical methods and high-performance computing Ability to work independently as well as to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take initiatives and pursue new research directions Note to Applicants: For full consideration, please submit (A) a cover letter describing background and relevant experience, (B) a full resume, and (C) contact information for three professional references.
