Computational Plasma Physicist - Equilibrium Reconstruction

Organisation Name: General Fusion
Organisation Type:
City: Richmond
State:
Country: United States

Job Description:

General Fusion wants to transform how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion has the potential to deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid. Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview:

As a member of the Applied Physics team, the Computational Plasma Physicist will develop software for evaluating the state of the plasma from experimental diagnostics. Primarily, the role will consist of translating diagnostic data into an understanding of fusion plasma behaviour in General Fusion’s Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) experiments and power plant. The focus will be on optimizing experimental probe placement, creating models for new probes and collaborating within the simulation team to integrate the edge model with MHD simulations of the magnetized plasma target under compression. Assets include experience with Bayesian statistics, plasma theory codes such as EFIT and OMFIT, or interpreting experimental plasma diagnostics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a team that is responsible for the development and use of tools for plasma reconstruction and analysis algorithms
  • Fit experimental data to a physics model using statistical methods.
  • Create and support tools to be used by others within General Fusion, including tools for physics modeling, and visualization
  • Take ownership of the modeling results, ensuring that they meet the needs, in both fidelity and confidence, of the engineering team
  • Evaluate new techniques, software, and computer resources

Relevant Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Computational research experience in plasma physics in a Linux environment
  • Experience with statistical data analysis tools and standard data science techniques
  • Strong programming skills and a willingness to learn new methods
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work in a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Creativity to devise new methods of expanding our understanding

Preferred:

  • Strong background in coding
  • Strong grasp of plasma physics theory
  • Familiarity with experimental methods and electromagnetic theory
  • Experience creating Python code, especially the use of Pandas, SciPy and related packages.
  • Familiarity with FEniCS PDE solver library
  • Experience with physics codes like GA EFIT, GA OMFIT, or ITER IMAS
  • Experience with calibrating and analyzing data from plasma diagnostics, such as magnetic sensors, interferometers, and Thomson scattering
  • Experience with C++ beneficial
  • Experience running code in parallel on HPC clusters

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

Education:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in plasma physics, mathematics, or a closely related field.
