Comput Mass Spec Graduate Scholar YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The primary responsibilities of this role Computational Mass S pectrometry Graduate Scholar are to: Proactively identify and incorporate tools to integrate computational structural and functional genomics for the discovery biosynthesis and characterization of genetically encoded small molecules from microbial sources; Support the development and application of tools to facilitate the structural elucidation of small molecules utilizing mass spectrometry and genomics; Leverage knowledge of natural product enzymes from validated biosynthetic pathways to predict chemical transformations encoded by gene clusters and match these to chemical products observed in the metabolome; Support the implementation of software to streamline data processing data mining and biomarker identification; Design and implement workflows for pathway analysis to inform discovery and fermentation optimization; Develop improve and deploy informatics pipelines to analyze and compare mass spectrometry-based metabolomics data.WHO YOU ARE Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values.

The position is anchored within a team of exceptional scientists, computational biologists and programmers, which collaborate directly on improving genome sequencing technology, interpretation and application. By working within the Steif Lab at the GSC, you will develop close relationships with world-renown specialists in bioinformatics and have access to one of the most robust computational and next generation genome sequencing technology facilities in Canada, all while living in one of the most beautiful, diverse and eclectic cities in the world.

Expertise is required in the specific area of computational methodologies including computer vision, machine learning, and neuroimaging, as well as experience in employing such methodologies in the study of mental health conditions is required. Successful candidates will have experience in submitting and receiving extramural funding from federal sources, such as NIH. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.

The successful candidate will analyze publicly-available and large-scale human genetic data-sets (genotyping, exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing data) and genomics data to identify genetic factors that may be targeted therapeutically, primarily leveraging our oligonucleotide expression increase and knockdown platform.

The projects involve statistical and computational analyses of in-house as well as publicly available datasets for generating computational predictions and data visualization relevant to the project’s goals. In addition, we are piloting various processes involving public health and research databases, with intention to integrate the discrete data into a meaningful health knowledge.

You will apply your full stack software engineering skills in modern web user interface design and development, microservices, and database technologies to digitize drug discovery processes that bring breakthrough medicines to patients. You will work closely with R&D researchers to align the solutions with the evolving needs of the scientific community while ensuring system usability, robustness, scalability, and maintainability. A good balance of scientific knowledge and solid technical skills will be key to the success of this role.

The candidate should also have experience with multiple modern techniques and algorithms in machine learning and statistical computing such as regression, clustering/segmentation, time-series analysis, recommender systems, predictive analytics, Bayesian modeling, data fusion, supervised/unsupervised learning, decision trees, A/B testing, natural language processing.
