Country: United States

Job Description:

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Comscope is a DOE-BES funded Computational Materials Science Center.  It is a multi-institutional effort (involving Brookhaven National Laboratories, Rutgers University, University of Virginia, and Ames Laboratories) to develop and disseminate methodologies (theory, algorithms, and codes) to accurately describe the physical properties of complex strongly correlated materials. It was launched in September 2015 and its aim is to accelerate scientific progress in materials research by enabling theoretical spectroscopy and theoretically guided material design to correlated electron systems.

Position Description

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a strong technical  background in theoretical condensed matter physics and materials science combined with experience operating in a high performance computational environment afforded, for example, by DOE supercomputing facilities at Oak Ridge National Lab and Argonne National Lab.

Essential Duties:

  • Collaborate with team to maintain and develop platform for strongly correlated materials simulation on HPC within DFT+DMFT and DFT+Gutzwiller theories
    • Python, C++, Fortran, and CUDA expertise
  • Develop and utilize GPU accelerated CTQMC software to ensure advantage of DMFT software in HPC environments
  • Develop software modules for strongly correlated material analysis
  • Leverage software platform to simulate and gain insight into material systems of interest (actinides, cuprates, nickelates, & iron pnictides) in HPC and near exascale environments
  •  Aid in the running of Comscope.
  • Helping prepare reports and scientific proposal writing.

This position is a term position that will be renewed with excellent performance and with the renewal of the Center.

Position Requirements

  • PhD and at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience  in Condensed Matter Physics, Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline and a good understanding of the physics of strongly correlated materials
  • Familiarity with Python, C++, and modern programming approaches to the development of software packages.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability for disseminating research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.
  • Willing to travel in order to disseminate results and communicate with scientists at institutions participating in the computational material science effort at BNL.
  • Experience with dynamical mean field theory and Green’s function methods
  • Demonstrated programming skills in a high performance computational environment
