We are seekingan Computational Machine Learning Scientist to join our teamin Albany OR. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary scientific and technically-oriented national laboratory team participation alongside other data scientists engineers geologists and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for Americas energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems to advancing technologies that enhance oil and natural gas extraction and transmission processes NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives stimulate a growing economy and improve the health safety and security of all Americans. Highly skilled women and men at NETLs three research sites Albany Oregon; Morgantown West Virginia and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOEs mission to advance the national economic and energy security of the United States.

Primary Responsibilities: The Computational Machine Learning Scientist will be responsible for supporting the design and development of lightweight cost-effective precipitation strengthened refractory high entropy alloys (RHEA) based on Nb-Mo-Ta-Ti-Zr-Hf-V-Cr-Al-C for additive manufacturing. They will deploy machine learning (ML) to the composition-properties relationship of RHEA including temperature-dependent yield strength and room temperature ductility. This includes data collection and curation and analysis ML algorithms development and properties prediction of new alloys using ML.

The successful candidate will work on local and geographically dispersed teams with other engineers scientists technicians subject matter experts faculty members post-doctoral students and graduate and undergraduate students from various socio-economic cultural and ethnic backgrounds from DOE National Laboratories other U.S. government laboratories universities industries and research organizations. The candidate will attend regular and ad hoc meetings and contribute to the development of written reports journal articles and presentations on findings and innovative solutions in DOE-sanctioned meetings scientific conferences and national committees.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Ph.D. degree in physics chemistry materials science chemical or mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Solid practical experience with:
    • High throughput screening;
    • Experience in developing predictive and inverse ML models (random forest support vector machine neural network etc.) for materials discovery;
    • Coding with Python MATLAB Linux etc. and;
    • Phase transformation thermodynamics and physics of metallic materials (in particular High entropy alloys and high strength steels).
  • Must be detail-oriented able to take initiative work well both independently and as a member of a team
  • Must be able to balance competing and changing priorities.
  • Must demonstrate competency in scientific and engineering modeling and analysis tools applicable to the specific tasks.
  • Must have a demonstrated record of successfully working independently and with minimum supervision as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary multi-cultural environment and interacting with people with a variety of expertise.
  • Must possess strong analytical oral and written communications skills particularly the ability to:
    • Analyze and interpret data generated from research apply data to analysis within the context of scope and direction and clearly report results;
    • Author and/or co-author reports manuscripts and articles suitable for inclusion in refereed journals and;
    • Present research results in company and client meetings and in externally facing settings
