The Scientific Computing|HPC team in the IT department of the Charité is responsible for the design and operation of the central computing environments for biomedical research at the Charité. In addition, we advise and support scientists on questions related to scientific computing and the processing of research data. We collaborate with the scientific groups of the Charité on computing technologies and methods and work closely with the other departments in the IT division, especially on infrastructure issues and integration issues.

  • Administration, monitoring, optimization and expansion of the Charité's HPC cluster with currently over 2000 CPU cores, 40+ GPUs, high-performance data storage) and related systems, such as batch systems (SLURM, Spectrum LSF) and high-performance mass storage (Spectrum Scale, Isilon OneFS )
  • Participation in the daily tasks of the Scientific Computing team, eg in monitoring and optimizing performance, managing configurations and security aspects
  • Management and maintenance of system software and firmware; Interaction and cooperation with manufacturer support for troubleshooting
  • Organization of data flows between sequencing and other laboratory equipment and computing systems
  • Participation in the virtualization and containment of processes and workflows; Cooperation with the central IT departments on topics such as network, data backup and archiving
  • Advising users and creating user documentation
  • Participation in the evaluation of new technologies and in the conception and implementation of cluster and service extensions; subject-specific technical project management

requirements

  • BSc in computer science, in a comparable technically oriented subject or 2+ years of proven professional experience in a comparable position
  • Advanced knowledge of the administration of Linux operating systems and secure command of at least one scripting language, e.g. B. Python, Bash or Perl
  • Very good knowledge of the administration, monitoring and maintenance of Linux-based HPC environments
  • Familiarity with software tools for managing HPC systems, schedulers and other HPC and automation frameworks (e.g. SLURM, xCAT, CFEngine, Ansible)
  • Safe handling of large amounts of data; Experience in operating enterprise file systems. Hands-on experience with Spectrum Scale or Isilon OneFS is an advantage
  • Knowledge in areas such as machine learning, cloud computing or high-performance interconnects is an advantage
  • Ability to create versioned and well-structured configurations
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present technical information in an understandable way; Confident knowledge of English and German is required
  • Motivation to deal with complex concepts and techniques, to develop them and to continuously educate yourself in these areas
  • Personal initiative, ability to work in a team and creativity, experience in interdisciplinary work
