We are seeking an experienced Computational Scientist (R&D Computer Science) to join our multidisciplinary team as a technical leader!

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Lead computer science research development modeling and simulation to support a variety of projects and internal and external customers
  • Engage with an agile team to research design and/or implement highly scalable concurrent runtimes and algorithms targeting emerging architectural platforms
  • Develop hardware architecture simulations to model complex interactions between processors network and memory for future supercomputers
  • Use your technical judgment while applying the scientific method to recognize and formulate key computer science problems that span computational science domains
  • Collaborate with diverse groups of domain experts to understand requirements co-design/development of scalable computer systems and/or applications

Required:

  • MS in STEM field plus at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience leading research and development projects and teams
  • Demonstrated proficiency with code development and software engineering
  • Demonstrated proficiency with at least one compiled language (e.g. C/C++ rust java)
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: computer system performance modeling and analysis HPC system architecture theory of concurrency and parallelism large-scale concurrent algorithms and/or scalable programming models research and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge skills and ability to perform independent research and development in computer or computational sciences or scalable systems through technical publications presentations or contributions to software tools/applications
  • Active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance

Desired:

  • PhD in STEM field
  • Ability to present and/or publish research findings
  • Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real-world data
  • Familiarity with the processes for obtaining and managing research funding including building project teams writing grants and progress reports and working with sponsors
  • Evidence of professional service to the community such as service on diversity and inclusion committees program committees workshop organization and/or editorial work

Department Description:

The Computer Sciences and Information Systems Center is the home of computer science and information systems work and capabilities at Sandia's California site. We have capabilities that span across multiple computer science and information systems disciplines. Our activities include computational science and mathematics research high performance computing visualization systems research and development problem solving environments information security research and operations and network operations.

The Scalable Modeling and Analysis Department is home to a diverse community of researchers and engineers conducting research and development on massively scalable modeling and analysis systems for scientific computing engineering sciences and complex systems. Our team has broad multi-disciplinary interests spanning diverse research areas and solving computational science problems important to Sandias mission. Our computer science research spans concurrency and parallelism distributed systems programming languages compilers advanced architectures automated workflows and data management uncertainty quantification data science and machine learning.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g. DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
