The SMSS invites applications for one tenure track Assistant Professor position in mathematics and statistics with an emphasis on computation to begin in Fall 2022. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding research ability and have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field. Applicants should also have strong records or promise as undergraduate and graduate instructors. This appointment involves teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and requires mentoring and supervision of undergraduate and graduate research. Department/College Background SMSS faculty have active research programs in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education with over 40 tenured/tenure-track faculty, over 100 graduate students and over 350 undergraduate students. The School offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Starting in Fall 2021 the SMSS is offering a Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications. This program is designed to bridge mathematics and statistics with interdisciplinary areas. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university, including the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, College of Health Professions, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. SMSS faculty closely collaborate with the South Texas Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (Edinburg), Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg), and the University of Texas School of Public Health (Brownsville). Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or a related field at the time of hire. Applicants must also have a research program with an emphasis on computation. Applicants must also have strong records or promise as undergraduate and graduate instructors with excellent communication skills. Discipline Specific Required Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Research experience in interdisciplinary areas; postdoctoral or industrial experience; experience with grant proposals; experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse student body and the ability to use modern technology and pedagogy to support teaching and learning are preferred. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
