What You Will Do

The Computer Computational and Statistical Sciences Division (CCS) is looking for a Program Manager to lead the Computational Systems and Software Environment (CSSE) program Element within the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. As the Program Manager you will provide programmatic leadership and portfolio management for the CSSE program element. Working with fellow program managers and the management teams in CCS HPC XCP T and XTD Divisions you will plan integrated activities and deliverables within the ASC program and across the LANL nuclear weapons program in support of an evolving predictive capability for the simulation of nuclear weapons within a dramatically shifting technology market. This role thrives on engagement with the broader simulation expertise at LANL in areas including astrophysics climate energy and other LANL mission relevant applications.

The line organization for this position is CCS. The position reports to the ASC Program Directors Office for program matters. The scope of the CSSE program includes the industry focus on accelerating technology; specialized hardware design and beyond Moores law technologies such as quantum and neuromorphic in ensuring increasing simulation fidelity. There is also a focus on data science specifically machine learning / artificial intelligence to address gaps in simulation and scientific understanding relative to core LANL mission efforts.

You will work closely with line management to develop and sustain an integrated portfolio of projects in computer science and systems research and development that demonstrably impact programmatic activities in weapon physics and engineering computing and validation. Current projects span a broad range of activities from weapons physics application readiness to research development and deployment activities in next-generation computing technologies (including program models and co-design) data analysis and visualization system software for high-performance computing (emphasizing scalability reliability and resilience) extreme-scale data management and storage and advanced communication libraries and parallel tools. In particular close coordination with ASCs Integrated Codes project will be required to support ASCs development of a next generation simulation code. Technical advisement for trilab procurements research contracts as well as for program planning against developing technology trends is required. In addition you will aggressively pursue investments technologies and projects that enable increased productivity of the weapon physics and engineering computing community and to that end maintain a close working relationship with federal program managers in planning of strategy for the ASC program as a whole.

Management

Demonstrated successful management of multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational research and development teams where scope schedule and budget are established and adhered to for successful delivery of technical advances.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated expert-level knowledge and R&D experience and consultative experience in one or more topical areas pertinent to the CSSE portfolio. These include but are not limited to high performance computing visualization computer science data science and leading-edge computing technologies such as quantum neuromorphic and even low precision or noisy methods.

Communication

A record of effective communication teamwork and consensus building.

Relationship Building

Consultative experience in interacting effectively with all levels of external and internal personnel; building trust gaining consensus and resolving conflicts.

Education/Experience:Position requires a Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related technical and project management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level an advanced degree in Computer Science or related field may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with the ASC program.

  • Previous line or program management experience.

  • Familiarity with DOE/SC ASCR program in general and specifically the Exascale Computing Project.

  • Active Q Clearance.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
