Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Quantum Computational Science Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The mission of the Quantum Computational Science Group is to develop quantum computational approaches to address important problems in basic and applied science. In this position you will be a primary contributor to a focused effort to benchmark fault-tolerant quantum computing technologies through modeling and numerical simulation. Under the guidance of ORNL staff you will design and implement major innovative additions to a quantum computing software stack and use the software stack to perform large-scale benchmarking simulations of one or more popular quantum computing technologies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop a software framework for specifying quantum hardware error models and fault-tolerant logical operations
  • Implement and interface this framework with preexisting ORNL quantum simulation software
  • Use the developed software to encode provided quantum hardware models and fault-tolerance schemes run large-scale simulations and analyze the results
  • Report progress and results on a regular basis to collaborators sponsors and the broader quantum computing community via oral presentations and peer-reviewed technical articles

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Quantum Computing Physics Mathematics Computer Science Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in computational physics
  • Experience in software development with working knowledge of C/C++ and Python

  • Experience in distributed simulation of quantum computations
  • Experience developing software for such simulations
  • Fluency in C/C++ and Python
  • An understanding of the various quantum computing abstraction layers and the logical interfaces between them
  • Familiarity with the principles of quantum fault tolerance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever changing needs
