Overview

The Technology Integration Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated scientist to research and advance the integration of Quantum computing systems with the HPC infrastructure at Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) and serve as a subject matter expert on Quantum computer systems and scientific liaison for the OLCF Quantum Computing User Program (QCUP).

This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division. The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific technical operational and thought leadership by developing hardening and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments.

The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. NCCS is advancing the development of Quantum computing to address the needs of scientific discovery and energy security. This includes developing the integration of Quantum computers with HPC systems and the acceleration of scientific applications using Quantum processing units. Through the OLCF Quantum Computing User Program the successful applicant will connect with a national network of scientists and vendors to innovate the uses and infrastructure expected for Quantum computing.

As a HPC Quantum Systems Scientist you will contribute to the development prototyping testing and evaluation of Quantum computing and HPC system technologies. You will collaborate with a team of HPC engineers computational scientists and Quantum computer scientists to deliver solutions for use in the QCUP.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers to assess programmability performance and reliability of existing Quantum systems and services.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of high-performance Quantum computing platform design projects.
  • Engage with internal and external researchers to monitor Quantum technologies and participate in future DOE-funded vendor Quantum research.
  • Serve as a Quantum Subject Matter Expert (SME) for NCCS.
  • Participate in system design explorations that combine traditional HPC and Quantum systems.
  • Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers technical papers reports and proposals.
  • Perform service including mentoring participating in conference committees and maintain membership and leadership in professional academic and research organizations.

Basic Qualifications

  • M.S. in computer science computer engineering electrical engineering physics or a related field and 7+ years of experience or equivalent or B.S. in one of these fields and 8+ years of experience.
  • General understanding of Quantum control systems and programming models.
  • Experience with systems level and/or Linux kernel programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in computer science computer engineering electrical engineering or a related field and 2+ years of experience or equivalent
  • Proven ability to analyze propose develop and deploy solutions to existing problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills oral and written communication skills and strong personal motivation.
  • Experience with two or more of:
    • Existing Quantum services (e.g. IBM Q Network D-Wave Rigetti QCS)
    • Quantum programming models
    • Systems architecture experience: HPC software development Linux kernel development and/or Heterogenous systems design/deployment
  • Experience with modern software development practices.
