Job Description:

Requisition Id6354

Overview:

The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics group is seeking a Computational Scientist passionate about applied machine learning. The successful candidate will work with a technically diverse team to develop new models and accelerate computationally expensive aspects of a variety of multiphysics simulations (e.g. computational fluid dynamics structural dynamics plasma physics). Anticipated needs include closure models scale bridging fidelity bridging and dimensionality bridging (e.g. representing 3D phenomena in 2D models). These methods will be implemented using modern code development tools and practices to be scalable to the worlds largest supercomputers including advanced heterogeneous architectures. Communication and teamwork will be key in order to verify these models and algorithms validate their use for specific applications and quantify the uncertainty associated with predictions made using these tools.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate conducts state-of-the-art research and development in computing and computational sciences in support of DOE's missions and programs. We develop and deploy leading edge computing and information technology capabilities to keep computational sciences at a level comparable to experimental sciences in the pursuit of scientific discovery and technical innovation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with a technically diverse team to develop and implement machine learning methods to accelerate a variety of physics simulation applications.
  • Work with users and within a team of other software developers to produce a robust maintainable scalable simulation capability.
  • Actively collaborate with domain experts from U.S. government laboratories and academia involved in similar efforts.
  • Interact with sponsors to define execute and report on relevant project elements.
  • Publish high quality research results in peer-reviewed open or classified journals and conferences if so authorized by the sponsoring agency.
  • Develop proposals and work statements for funding with ability to manage work scope and deliverables to sponsors

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in science technology engineering or mathematics (STEM) field.
  • Demonstrated experience with the application of machine learning methods to problems involving physics based modeling.
  • Strong expertise using Python libraries for deep learning such as scikit-learn and PyTorch
  • Strong computational skills including programming in C++ and programming for HPC architectures including MPI threaded programming and/or GPU programming

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant professional R&D experience outside of Ph.D.
  • Familiarity with performance-portable code development concepts and programming models including libraries such as Kokkos and Raja.
  • Familiarity with data parallelism and deep learning model distribution to perform distributed training of deep learning models
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following areas:
  • A proven publication track record.
  • A proven record of successful proposal development.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written)

Special Requirements:

  • It is required of this position the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

Relocation:Moving can be overwhelming and expensive. UT-Battelle offers a generous relocation package to ease the transition process. Domestic and international relocation assistance is available for certain positions. If invited to interview be sure to ask your Recruiter (Talent Acquisition Partner) for details.
