Overview:

The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics group is seeking a Senior Computational Scientist to develop and implement particle-based multiphysics modeling techniques. Relevant physics include; fluid dynamics fluid structure interaction solid mechanics thermal modeling and plasma physics. The group is looking for someone passionate about advancing the state-of-the-art in particle-in-cell (PIC) material point methods (MPM) and meshfree methods for a variety of applications. These methods will be implemented using modern code development tools and practices to be scalable to the worlds largest supercomputers including advanced heterogeneous architectures.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate conducts state-of-the-art research and development in computing and computational sciences in support of DOE's missions and programs. We develop and deploy leading edge computing and information technology capabilities to keep computational sciences at a level comparable to experimental sciences in the pursuit of scientific discovery and technical innovation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement particle methods for a variety of physics applications
  • Work with users and within a team of other software developers to produce a robust maintainable scalable simulation capability.
  • Actively collaborate with domain experts from U.S. government laboratories and academia involved in similar efforts.
  • Interact with sponsors to define execute and report on relevant project elements.
  • Publish high quality research results in peer-reviewed open or classified journals and conferences if so authorized by the sponsoring agency.
  • Present non-sensitive research in professional journals and conferences.
  • Develop proposals and work statements for funding with ability to manage work scope and deliverables to sponsors

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in science technology engineering or mathematics (STEM) field and 6-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of particle and hybrid particle/grid methods for the simulation of one or more of the follow areas: fluid dynamics fluid structure interaction solid mechanics thermal modeling or plasma physics.
  • Strong computational skills including programming in C++ and programming for HPC architectures including MPI threaded programming and GPU programming

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of relevant professional R&D experience outside of Ph.D.
  • Familiarity with performance-portable code development concepts and programming models including libraries such as Kokkos and Raja.
  • Experience in applying machine learning and artificial intelligence in practice in physics and engineering simulations.
  • A proven publication track record.
  • A proven record of successful proposal development.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written) strategic planning organization and decision-making skills.
