Overview:

The Multimodal Data Analytics Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior researcher to leverage expertise in large-scale biomedical informatics and statistical genetics tobuild and use tools for healthcare needs. This group creates scalable AI and machine-learning solutions for multidimensional multimodal data in HPC environments applied to biomedicine and bioengineering. It includes privacy and biomedical informatics for supervised and unsupervised learning with healthcare data specifically phenotyping information extraction medical imaging and new outcomes such as recurrence.

This position will be part of the Advanced Computing for Health Sciences Section within the Computational Sciences & Engineering Division (CSE).

The Advanced Computing for Health Sciences Section delivers scalable and computational solutions to biomedical and healthcare delivery challenges.

CSE focuses on transdisciplinary computational science and analytics at scale to enable scientific discovery across the physical sciences engineered systems and biomedicine and health sciences. It provides foundations and advances in quantum computation and information science and develops community applications data assets and technologies to advance crosscutting science outcomes.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create evaluate and publish novel research ideas supervise and mentor students and collaborate with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include but are not limited to:

  • Rapid prototyping and evaluation of computing systems to adaptively steer data collection from high-throughput microscopy instruments.
  • Conducting research on compute-intensive data processing and analysis using computing resources that are tightly couple to scientific instruments.
  • Developing novel approaches to data analysis that tightly integrate data acquisition edge computing and supercomputing resources.
  • Develop methods for autonomous experimentation in multimodal imaging.
  • Studying the performance of resiliency power and productivity of contemporary and future high-performance computer systems under various workload characteristics through measurement modeling and simulation.
  • Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals.
  • Actively collaborating with industry academia government labs and applications developers in a variety of venues.
  • Contributing to research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.

Basic Qualifications Required:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in computer science computational science or a related discipline.and at least six years of relevant research experience beyond the PhD.
  • A well established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.
  • Knowledge of microscopy data acquisition and data management tools edge computing architectures like AI appliances and GPU compute clusters data analysis methods and basic machine learning methodology.
  • Previous experience with parallel and distributed computing tools such as CUDA NCCL and MPI
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow and PyTorch

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in computer science computational science or a related discipline.and at least 12+ years of relevant research experience beyond the PhD.
  • The ability to take initiative on research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications.
  • First-hand experience with data acquisition at a large-scale microscopy facility.
  • Experience with computing at a leadership computing facility such as OLCF ALCF or NERSC.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills oral and written communication skills and strong personal motivation.
  • The ability to work in a dynamic interdisciplinary team.
