Overview:

We are seeking a Research Scientist to investigate scalable quantum computing architectures. This position resides in the Quantum Computational Science Group in the Computational Science and Engineering Division Computing and Computational Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team you will support ongoing projects targeting the analysis and design of utility-scale quantum computers. In collaboration with experts in quantum algorithms and quantum computer hardware you will develop analytical methods and software tools to quantify logical and physical resources for fault-tolerant utility-scale quantum computing with the goals of assessing feasibility and identifying tradeoffs in the design space. This work may lead to the development of new fault tolerance protocols compilation schemes and/or architecture designs.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Implement software and analytical methods to estimate computational resources for state-of-the-art fault tolerance schemes
  • Implement software and analytical methods to estimate physical resources for promising quantum computing architectures
  • Study the impact of design choices on resource-performance tradeoffs and investigate new opportunities in the design space

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in physics computer science engineering mathematics or a related discipline
  • At least 1 year of training or experience in quantum computing
  • Fluency in at least one scientific computing language (C/C++ Fortran Python Matlab Julia etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of training or experience in quantum computing
  • Working knowledge of leading quantum error correction and fault tolerance schemes
  • Experience in collaborative software development including distributed source control testing and documentation
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever changing needs.
