Pay Range

$153210 - $196788 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education experience the external labor market and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Laser-Plasma Computational Scientist to perform simulations in support of experiments and lead frontier research in the areas of high-energy density physics and inertial fusion energy research. Areas of active research are high intensity laser-plasma interactions plasma acceleration of particles and high-energy density physics. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Run large-scale particle-in-cell simulations for the development of secondary particle sources.
  • Participate in the planning and design of experiments at ultra-high intensity laser facilities around the world in collaboration with experimentalists at LLNL and external institutions for the demonstration of very high energy electron acceleration using laser wakefield.
  • Perform particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using WarpX for laser-driven particle acceleration and laser matter interactions on high performance computing system under the direction of senior scientists.
  • Assist with the implementation of relativistic implicit algorithms for particle transport in dense plasmas in PIC simulations.
  • Perform proton source simulations for the proton fast ignition scheme for inertial fusion energy (IFE).
  • Prepare written reports presentations and proposals for internal and external audiences including sponsors.
  • Collaborate in a large interdisciplinary team to research design and develop experiments and systems to meet the priorities for current and future missions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in physics Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience simulating laser matter interactions using particle-in-cell (PIC) codes on high performance computing (HPC) platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge in the applications of high peak power lasers and plasma physics including laser wakefield acceleration.
  • Publication track record demonstrating experience writing scientific articles and presentations at conferences in the fields of plasma physics.
  • Advanced experience in problem solving decision making and analytical skills.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in scientific publications leading research initiatives estimating effort setting milestones and managing within a designated budget.
