Job Description:

Requisition Id12071

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nations biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6000 people! Our vision for diversity equity inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNLs broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy environment and security solutions for the nation.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work as part of our Computational Astrophysics team. In this role you will focus on state-of-the-art simulations for core-collapse supernovae developing the next-generation of simulation code and analysis tools while analyzing the results of current simulations. You will work alongside a dedicated team of researchers both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and as part of the multi-institutional Flash-X team and have the opportunity to share your results with the scientific community. This position resides in the Nuclear Particle and Astrophysics Group of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and is part of the Exascale Astrophysics for FRIB (Facility of Rare IsotopeBemas) project supported by the DOE Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program.

As part of our research team you will be responsible for developing new capabilities and analyzing state-of-the-art models of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) using the Flash-X code. Flash-X is a multi-physics code built for a wide range of astrophysical applications. You will be responsible for a number of essential developments for Flash-X including approaches to relativistic gravity nuclear kinetics and the solution of linear systems stemming from neutrino transport algorithms. The models we will run with the improved version of Flash-X will address key questions in the physics of CCSNe for example: What is the range of stars for which successful CCSNe occur? What is the contribution of CCSNe to Galactic Chemical Evolution?
