What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to focus on the development of new heterogeneous numerical methods for complex multi-physics problems combining conventional, e.g., finite elements and data driven, e.g., Physics Informed Neural Networks components. This role offers the opportunity to join a diverse, world-class team, from the Computational Mathematics and Optimization and UQ departments. This effort is partially supported by a DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) grants. Scientific research areas include formulation, analysis and demonstration of new coupling approaches for the integration of arbitrary combinations of conventional and data-driven computational models with particular emphasis on the development of domain-decomposition and optimization-based coupling techniques. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support collaborative efforts to develop provably stable and accurate coupling methods and solution methods for heterogeneous numerical models of complex Multiphysics systems.

  • Perform software development, and numerical experimentation along with uncertainty quantification.

  • Contribute to dissemination efforts including writing reports, journal publications and presenting at conferences.

    This position requires infrequent (1-2 times per year) travel. While this position is located at Sandia’s New Mexico site, engagement with scientists at Sandia’s California site, as well as collaborators external to Sandia is encouraged. Ability to collaborate with a diverse set of colleagues is a strong advantage in this position.

    The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • You have or will have a PhD in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physical science, or equivalent discipline - required to start plus a bachelor's or master's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)

  • Experience with computational formulations and solution methods for at least two of the following: physics informed neural networks, reduced order models, operator inference, domain decomposition, optimization and control

  • Experience with finite element or finite volume methods for PDEs

  • Advanced computer programming experience in at least one language (C++, Python, TensorFlow, Matlab, Julia)

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated strong background and expertise in numerical methods for PDEs, especially property-preserving schemes for hyperbolic PDEs (FCT, WENO, AFC), Lagrangian and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian methods.

  • Experience with variational methods, variational analysis, approximation theory, functional analysis

  • Experience in a collaborative research environment on problems comprising diverse application domains.

  • Research experience in multi-scale/multi-physics simulations, high-performance data analytics, numerical methods

  • Experience with at least one of the following application areas: computational fluid dynamics, multimaterial flows, flow in porous media, computational solid mechanics.

  • Evidence of strong research achievements in relevant technical areas as demonstrated in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications.

The Center for Computing Research (CCR) at Sandia National Laboratories creates technology and solutions for many of our nation's most demanding national security challenges. The Center's portfolio spans the spectrum from fundamental research to state¿of¿the¿art applications. Our work includes computer system architecture (both hardware and software); enabling technology for modeling physical and engineering systems; and research in discrete mathematics, data analytics, cognitive modeling, and decision support materials. The Computational Mathematics Department (01442) conducts research in computational and applied mathematics motivated by science and engineering applications of interest to Sandia National Laboratories and the U.S. Department of Energy. Members of the department interact and collaborate with a broad range of Sandia and DOE staff and also maintain a research presence in the external professional community by collaborating with universities and industry, publishing peer-reviewed literature, participating in professional societies, and refereeing and editing for journals.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
