What your job will be like:

This position will be part of a collaborative effort encompassing experimental nuclear physics and data science to develop AI-assisted design approaches to optimize the design of the ePIC experiment at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider. This collaborative initiative builds upon the key insights drawn from the DOE Town Halls on AI for Science held in 2019: "AI techniques that can optimize the design of complex, large-scale experiments have the potential to revolutionize the way experimental nuclear physics is currently done”. The approach will involve the meticulous utilization of Geant4-based simulations, integrated with the software stack of the ePIC experiment. The AI-assisted detector design optimization will be supported by expansive distributed processing capabilities, creating a robust and all-encompassing infrastructure tailored for the optimization of large-scale detector systems. The resulting infrastructure will find universal applicability, adaptable to large-scale experiments planned at CEBAF and various other facilities.

 In this role, you will:

  • Work with data scientists on a multi-objective optimization framework. The development will focus on the management of a multidimensional detector design space and multiple competing noisy objectives, while also accommodating constraints.
  • Aid to the development of detector simulations as well as detector and physics studies for the ePIC experiment.
  • Study the AI-assisted design approach on specific examples.

Applicants should upload (a) their CV, (b) research interest/plan and (c) publication list through JLab's online application tracking system at https://www.jlab.org/job-openi... .

Additionally, at least 2 letters of recommendation should be sent on your behalf to Sadie Cherry (cherry @ jlab.org)
