Pay Range

$153210 $196788 Annually for the SES.3 level
$183840 $236112 Annually for the SES.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education experience the external labor market and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Computational Scientist to join our team and advance the discipline as well as apply cutting edge tools and techniques to some of societys most important problems. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of physicists computational scientists high-performance computing experts and other domain scientists to contribute to a large-scale physics application. You will collaborate with a broad and diverse team to develop physical models and apply them using parallel discrete event simulations running on high-performance computers. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Research develop implement and evaluate new physics models in a discrete event simulation framework.
  • Collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers internally and externally to accomplish research and development goals.
  • Present and disseminate results at program reviews scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Establish future research directions and author grant proposals including presentations to programmatic sponsors and external funding agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 level

  • Establish independent research thrusts through strategic engagements with internal and external sponsors.
  • Lead a research team in support of one or more mission related scientific applications.
  • Provide strategic guidance to LLNL management and demonstrate technical leadership.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science Applied Mathematics Physics or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Development experience with C++ and Python as well as application development with workflow tools batch submission and parallel computing.
  • Significant experience in working with diverse teams to solve complex problems and deliver practical solutions.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team author technical and scientific reports and papers and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Significant analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to craft creative solutions and solve complex problems.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Substantial record of sustained program development and strategic engagement.
  • Substantial technical leadership in computational science.
  • Expert verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams to present and explain technical information and to advise senior management and external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Current SCI clearance.
  • Experience in working with subject matter experts in one or more areas such as physics biology and engineering.
