Overview:

Interested in taking your scientific computing skills to the next level? We are seeking a senior computer scientist to lead a world class research group in the areas ofArchitectures and Performancefor the Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) and Department of Energy (DOE) missions. Responsibilities include group technical leadership and management and research.

TheArchitectures and Performance Group(APG) designs and prototypes the scientific computing systems of tomorrow. APG works closely with domain scientists to solve key computational challenges in DOEs scientific mission. We coordinate and partner with other groups across ORNL other national laboratories academic and industry to investigate the fast-moving dynamic landscape of computing.

This challenging position is in theAdvanced Computing Systems Sectionwithin theComputer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas including applied mathematics and computer science experimental computing systems scalable algorithms and systems artificial intelligence and machine learning data management workflow systems analysis and visualization technologies programming systems and environments and system science and engineering.

Purpose:

You will have the opportunity to provide Research and Development (R&D) leadership to a group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNLs status as the worlds premier R&D institution!

You will bring together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership cultivate ORNLs culture among group members and continue to build and scale up individual excellence and impact in R&D.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Be a recognized leader in your area of technical expertise that will initiate lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis! Responsibilities for this position include working with the project team to create evaluate and publish novel research ideas mentoring students and collaborating with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include but are not limited to:

  • Rapid prototyping and evaluation of experimental systems including hardware software tools and applications and being proficient developing sophisticated software systems like an operating system compiler adaptive runtime system or scalable performance tool.
  • Studying the performance resiliency power and efficiency of modern and future high-performance computer systems under various workload characteristics through measurement modeling and simulation.
  • Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals such as SC ICRC ISSCC MICRO and IEEE TPDS.
  • Actively collaborating with industry academia government labs and applications developers in a variety of venues.
  • Delivering research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.

Additional Responsibilities include:

Leadership

  • Lead creation of a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
  • Seize on new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts by tracking industry academic and government trends.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the groups strategy and members long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Advise your R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.
  • Attract a quality diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to extraordinary R&D and aspire to be the best in their field.
  • Lead by exercising the principles in ORNLs Research Code of Conduct as a guide for proposing performing and communicating research.
  • Coach and mentor staff regarding Battelles Safe Conduct of Research principles
  • Lead ESH&Q by example and ensure all work is carried out safely securely and in compliance with ORNL policies standards and procedures.
  • Exemplify a commitment to One ORNL by modeling lab expectations for excellence in research operations and community engagement and by working in coordination to leverage capabilities across the lab.

Service

  • Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group.
  • Encourage staff to think and dream big take appropriate risks in their work and develop skills that will enable them to pursue new insights scientific passions and research programs.
  • Advance the reputation of ORNL through Professional Society leadership and involvement and organization of technical events.
  • Support group members by consistently reviewing technical products such as proposals publications and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards.
  • Build strong interdisciplinary teams across ORNL and the community.
  • Connect staff to your scientific network and professional societies.
  • Hold regular scientific/technical group meetings and be visible in the labs and workplace.
  • Assume front-line responsibility for safety in the groups laboratory.
  • Communicate the importance of protecting proprietary or sensitive information and following ORNL cybersecurity policies and guidelines.

Basic Qualifications Required:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in computer science computational science or a related subject area. Have at least six years of relevant research experience beyond the PhD.
  • A well-established track record of research relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.
  • Have experience in leading R&D teams.
  • Knowledge in emerging computing architectures including heterogeneous computing and memory systems.
  • Previous experience in an area of computing architectures such as: heterogeneous computing architectures neuromorphic computing cryogenic computing analog computing silicon photonics carbon-nanotube based devices or alternative memory devices.
  • Letters

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire to take initiative on research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications.
  • Excellent social skills oral and written communication skills and strong personal motivation.
  • Growing in a dynamic interdisciplinary team.
  • Expertise experience and relationships with one or more of the customer stakeholder communities for this group.
  • Experience crafting and executing strategies as part of a cohesive leadership team.
  • Experience recruiting hiring and mentoring staff members.
