Description

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-eligible position in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Anticipated start date is August 16, 2024. The Applied and Computational Mathematics program consists approximately of 20 faculty members, and it has close ties with our Theoretical Mathematics and Statistics groups.

The essential duties of the position will be to conduct research on areas of applied mathematics, mathematical biology, computational mathematics, and/or data science, publish in appropriate high-quality journals, disseminate research at conferences and colloquia, provide quality teaching and mentoring in our undergraduate and graduate programs, and participate in appropriate professional service.

SoMSS currently has 55 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and approximately 80 supported Ph.D. students, along with an additional 48 Ph.D. students and 48 Master’s students. The School offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. programs in Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Statistics, as well as undergraduate and Master’s programs in Actuarial Science. In addition, the School offers an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree program in Data Science, and participates in a cross-college Ph.D. program in Data Science.

Arizona State University, The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences value our cultural and intellectual diversity, and continually strive to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. More than 1,170 students pursue undergraduate degrees in SoMSS through in-person and online curricula. Approximately 23% of our students are from underrepresented minorities, 28% are Pell grant eligible, and 13% are the first in their families to attend a university. Our fully online program in Data Science serves a large population of students who might otherwise not participate in university education.

The School has excellent computing resources that include individual faculty workstations, several high-performance servers and a small cluster, as well as access to the University's central computing facilities and the High-Performance Computing Initiative. More details can be found at https://math.asu.edu.

The School has a strong interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous opportunities for collaboration on the campus with, for example, the Fulton Schools of Engineering, the School of Earth and Space Exploration, the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, and with interdisciplinary centers and institutes, such as the Institute for Social Science Research, the College of Health Solutions, the Global Institute of Sustainability, as well as off-campus with the thriving medical and technical industries in the Phoenix region. The escalating interest in data science research throughout ASU will offer further opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Arizona State University is a comprehensive public research university named #1 in the United States for innovation for the eighth consecutive year, ahead of MIT and Stanford. We measure our success not by whom we exclude, but rather by whom we include and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities we serve. Arizona State University was named a Hispanic-Serving Institution in 2022.

Arizona State University serves more than 57,500 students at its Tempe campus, welcoming students from all fifty states and more than one hundred nations across the globe.
