Job Description:

Requisition Id11531

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nations biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6000 people! Our vision for diversity equity inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNLs broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy environment and security solutions for the nation.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the simulation of multiphase reacting and porous media flows for applications such as material and chemical synthesis. The candidate will perform large scale simulations and develop physics based predictive models to guide the development of novel chemical and material processes for manufacturing industries.

The candidate will be a postdoctoral researcher within the Multiscale Materials (MM) group of the Advanced computing methods for Physical Sciences Section in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED). The MM group is focused on delivering multiscale multi-fidelity computational models and systems using algorithms and analytics for materials and related physical sciences for a broad range of energy transportation and advanced manufacturing applications. The MM group also houses specific strengths in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of interfacial and reacting flows relevant to material synthesis and manufacturing. CSED focuses on transdisciplinary computational science and analytics at scale to enable scientific discovery across the physical sciences engineered systems and biomedicine and health. It provides foundations and advances in quantum information sciences to enable quantum computers devices and networked systems. It develops community applications data assets and technologies and provides assurance to build knowledge and impact in novel crosscut-science outcomes.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary research environment consisting of computational scientists computer scientists experimentalists and engineers/physicists conducting basic and applied research in support of the Laboratorys missions.
  • Participate in the development of algorithms and software for the simulation of complex reacting flows for applications such as material synthesis and separation processes.
  • Participate in the design and architecture of integrated multi-scale coupled-physics computer codes design and implementation of scalable numerical methods uncertainty quantification and following team planning documentation verification and validation and software quality processes.
  • Author peer reviewed papers as well as present in workshops and conferences.
  • Deliver ORNLs mission by aligning behaviors priorities and interactions with our core values of Impact Integrity Teamwork Safety and Service. Promote diversity equity inclusion and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace in how we treat one another work together and measure success.

  • A PhD in Chemical Mechanical Aerospace Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • Extensive experience in the development and application of software tools for numerical simulation of complex reacting flows.
  • Proven publication track record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the development of large-scale numerical simulation codes using C++
  • Experience in parallel algorithm and software development including message passing (MPI) and programming models (e.g. CUDA OpenMP Kokkos) for multicore and heterogeneous architectures such as graphical processing units (GPUs).
  • Experience in the development and application of computationally efficient numerical methods and discretization schemes to complex flow applications
  • Experience with advanced computing methods including version control repositories data analytics and numerical libraries such as Trilinos PETSc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to ever changing needs.
