Description of the scientific environment
The position is in the group of. Prof Nikos S Hatzakis. The group combines on single protein biophysics single cell biophysics and quantitative image analysis using machine learning to understand and control the role of protein dynamics on biomolecule recognition and cellular response regulation.

Short Project description
The postdoc will be working on establishing fluorescent microscopy assays often at the single molecule level to study the interaction of proteins with model membrane systems ligands and glycans as well as understanding at the cellular levels the mechanism underlying delivery of pharmaceutics. The postdoc will be using single particle fluorescent microscopy techniques (TIRF and confocal as well as lattice light sheet microscopy) and quantitative image analysis. The postdoc will be interacting tightly either with machine learning analysis of my group and collaborating groups single cell biophysics and with synthetic glycochemistry groups. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Formal requirements
In order to be considered applicants must have:

  • A PhD degree in either in Biophysics or Physics or Nanoscience or similar field.
  • A documented experience in:
    • fluorescence microscopy (e.g. TIRF confocal)
    • imaging model membranes or live cell handling and imaging with fluorescence microscopy
    • protein functional or/and structural characterization preferably at single molecule level
    • interaction of biologicals with membrane and delivery in cells
    • statistical analysis and computational image analysis
    • writing and understanding scientific software including Matlab and Python for quantitative image analysis and treating large datasets and experience with code sharing using git/github
  • Excellent and documented English communication skills.
  • The ideal candidate should be motivated have a strong publication record be able to work independently within an international cross-disciplinary group and to supervise students.

Skills of additional interest include:

  • Expertise in single molecule microscopy
  • Previous experience in carbohydrate degrading proteins and sugars
  • Experience with handling model membrane systems (nanodisc or liposomes)
  • Expertise in biochemistry and protein characterization
  • Previous experience in single molecule fluorescence microscopy building.
  • Documented expertise of working in an international multicultural environment
