Job Description:

Assistant Professor of Genomics and computational biology

Department of Biology
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Sandelin group is looking to recruit a talented assistant professor to our highly dynamic research group working in the interface of computational biology and medical genomics. The position is for three years in the interdisciplinary project MIGRAGEN:Using novel microfluidic gradient devices to drive genetic andfunctional understanding of spatiotemporal gradients in tumor microenvironments

Research environment

The project is a highly interdisciplinary collaboration between four groups at the Dept. of Biology (Profs. Albin Sandelin Stine F. Pedersen) the Technical University of Denmark (Assoc. Prof. Rodolphe Marie) and Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing Berlin (Prof. Ute Resch-Genger). The candidate will be based in the Sandelin group working closely with the other groups. Together the groups employ multiple postdocs PhD students and undergraduate students and provide a strong international research environment.

Research project and qualifications
The project aims to develop and apply a new generation of microfluidic devices that allow constitution of spatiotemporally precise gradients of acidosis and hypoxia key properties of the tumor microenvironment. The project has been active for 3 years and is now at the stage where the focus is addressing key biological questions on impact of the applied gradients on cancer cell-macrophage interactions chemotaxis and chemotherapy resistance. The assistant professor will be responsible for all work on this project in the Sandelin lab in close collaboration with the three other groups.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in molecular biology methods development and in genetic engineering as well as bioinformatics. In particular methods development experience based on Cap Analysis of Gene Expression (CAGE) full-length cDNA sequencing using the Nanopore platform cell-based applications in microfluidics and spatial transcriptomics using the 10x Genomics Visium platform are necessary. Additional experience in high-throughput screening and use of lab automation (such as Opentrons Echo acoustic dispenser etc.) are highly desirable.

Other essential requirements are a PhD in a life science field a documented track record of strong scientific publications and excellent written and spoken English. The candidate must be able to work autonomously as well as in a team and have a passion for working in a highly interdisciplinary environment.Duties will include teaching and supervision in addition to research

The assistant professors duties will primarily include research including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research teaching societal impact organisational contribution external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
