Overview:

The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) houses the most advanced supercomputing systems in the world including the exsascale Frontier system which is currently the fastest computer on the world-wide Top500 list. The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides world class leading innovative computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals.

We're seeking to hire a dynamic and enthusiastic Computational Scientist in the area of Computational Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) to act as a liaison between OLCF and the LQCD user community and to contribute to software development of community LQCD codes to maximize the scientific potential of our world leading facilities. Our new team member will also provide deep technical expertise in high performance computing (HPC) that can be applied to a diverse range of projects. The position also provides for the opportunity to carry out independent research in LQCD in areas of physics aligning with the goals of the Physical Sciences Division or in related areas of importance to OLCLF.

Our team members in the Advanced Computing in Nuclear Particle and Astrophysics Group within the Scientific Engagement Section partner with NCCS users in computational Astronomy Astrophysics Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics. We enable the use of outstanding facilities provided by NCCS. Group members carry out research and are known researchers in their application domains. They thrive on collaboration with NCCS and OLCF users and vendor partners and are a key channel for user representation and advocacy. They also providing broad expertise technical mentorship and service to assist in strategic decision making future system and infrastructure development procurement and deployment and championing our mission of NCCS and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for the needs of a broad range of application communities for OLCF planning and decision-making
  • Collaborate with other researchers both internally at ORNL and externally on topics of mutual interest.
  • Create research proposals in LQCD related or computational science as appropriate
  • Research and report results in journals technical manuals and conferences.
  • Collaborate scientifically with awarded OLCF projects.
  • Contribute to current OLCF procurement activities and assist in capability planning exercises for future OLCF procurements

Basic Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in a Lattice QCD related subject area (such as nuclear or particle physics) or relevant scientific subject area (plasma physics astrophysics etc.) applied mathematics or computer science
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in computational LQCD (in calculations for nuclear or high energy physics or algorithm development) or a related area such as applied mathematics or computer science with proven track record developing application code and/or libraries for HPC resources.
  • Skilled in numerical methods parallel algorithms MPI and a common scientific computing programming language such as Fortran C and/or C++.
  • Experience of parallel software development on large-scale computational resources.
  • Experience developing code for heterogenous accelerated architectures (GPUs).
  • Thriving in a multidimensional dynamic team is required. Excellent social skills oral and written communication skills organizational skills and strong personal motivation are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more prominent LQCD simulation codes or libraries that use the Leadership Computing Facilities (e.g. Chroma MILC CPS Grid QUDA etc.)
  • Applying machine learning or quantum computing techniques to accelerate and/or innovate in large scale computational applications.
  • Coding in multiple scientific computing languages and programming models especially those facilitating performance portability or facilitating the integration of HPC and Artficial Intelligence methods
  • Experience with performance characterization debugging and optimization of parallel applications
  • Research background in applications of LQCD techniques in a scientific area of interest to OLCF or to the ORNL Physical Sciences division
