Pay Range
$153210 - $236112 Annually

$153210 - $196788 Annually for the SES.3 level

$183840 - $236112 Annually for the SES.4 level


Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education experience the external labor market and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Radar Systems Engineer for modeling RF propagation and scattering radar cross-section estimation and evolution as functions of time and aspect capable of applying commercial and in-house simulation tools for analysis and design in support of our national security missions. You will be responsible for using your engineering judgement and modeling experience for a wide variety of projects including the areas of: radar detection radar system characterization radar cross section modeling and analysis link budget estimation and general radio frequency (RF) electromagnetics. This position is in the Department of Defense and Technologies Section within the National Ignition Facility Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide Radar knowledge to interdisciplinary teams work under general supervision with light guidance assist in determining own tasks and milestones perform modeling using industry-standard modeling tools and utilize in-house simulation tools on world-leading supercomputers.
  • Contribute subject matter Radar expertise to multidisciplinary teams by characterizing Radar systems and determining Radar Cross Sections for entities of interest.
  • Ability to model Radar return signal and Radar Cross Section in commercial codes (CST Microwave Studio FEKO HFSS).
  • Handle large data sets with High Performance Computing knowledge.
  • Organize and analyze data from research present results at technical interchange meetings and program status reviews.
  • Provide engineering solutions for research projects with competing priorities implement research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment where commitments and deadlines are important to project success.
  • Provide advanced conceptual solutions to a diverse range of complex issues/problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.
  • Interface with DoD organizations and provide RF assessment briefings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 level

  • Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Serve as a project leader for analysis and design projects.
  • Perform advanced research in at least one of the following areas: computational electromagnetics Radar or RF propagation modeling.
  • Develop new ideas and redefine customer requirements impacting Department of Defense (DOD) operations or directions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance and Department of Defense (DOD) Top Secret clearance which require U.S. citizenship.
  • Masters degree in engineering or physics or closely related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience with Radar systems.
  • Experience in simulating Radar system detection characterization propagation modeling and Radar Cross Section analysis.
  • Proficiency with commercial electromagnetic simulation tools such as XPatch and commercial Electromagnetics simulation tools (HFSS FEKO CST).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to prepare and present papers reports proposals and document results to your team.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Significant experience in making proposals to sponsors to help fund technology developments and executing on those proposals to meet sponsor expectations.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with real time information tracks and complex RCSs.
  • Experience with data fusion techniques.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related Radar systems computational modeling experience.
  • Familiarity with geometric optics tools for radar analysis such as XPatch.
