Job Description:

Extend our German Heart Center Munich (DHM) research team and enhance cutting-edge scientific knowledge through computational modeling of the cardiovascular system, specifically for the treatment of congenital heart defects (CHDs). Your focus will be to apply novel modeling methods from the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence to simulate the complex interdependency of hemodynamics and vascular structure.

The project ‘Digitaler Herz-OP’ is a collaborative research project with the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The joint project is the nucleus of the lighthouse initiative "AI Heart Center" led by front-running experts in both science and technology from TUM as well as in medicine at DHM. We are looking forward to an experienced person to join the DHM-MIRMI team, willing to learn and adapt to a highly dynamic and agile research environment and develop cutting-each research for the medicine of the future. You will work under the direct mentorship of Prof. Dr. med. Peter Ewert, Director of the DHM Clinic for Congenital Heart Defects, and Prof. Sami Haddadin, Director of TUM MIRMI.

Major tasks and responsibilities

  • Computational modeling of the hemodynamics and fluid-structure interaction in the human aorta, e.g. following the port-Hamiltonian method, for real-time simulation
  • Model verification and validation using physical models and patient data
  • Publication at top-tier conferences/journals such as Computational Mechanics, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, EMBC
  • Supervision of student projects (bachelor/master)
  • Active collaboration with industrial/clinical project partners

Your qualification and skill set

  • Masters degree (required) and PhD (optional) in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar field
  • Strong background and interest in multiple of the following areas: systems and control theory, analytical and computational mathematics, fluid dynamics modeling
  • Strong programming skills (Matlab, Simulink, and/or Python)
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed conferences and journals
  • Ability to write and speak English well is a must

Beneficial skills

  • Previous knowledge and/or interest in cardiovascular medicine and vascular interventions is beneficial
  • Experience processing and analyzing human subject data is a benefit
  • Knowledge of German is a plus

What we offer

Within a cutting-edge research ecosystem with real impact on public health, we offer excellent possibilities for professional development. The payment will be according to TV-L. The position is full time and initially limited to one year with expected further extension. The option for continuing as a PhD candidate may be discussed.

The German Heart Center Munich promotes professional equality between women and men and provides the same employment opportunity for severely disabled people in case of equal qualifications.
