Salary Range:

Tenure-stream assistant professor starting salary can range from $98,135 to $109,000, based on the number of years of teaching experience. Benefits are competitive. Purpose:
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Santa Clara University is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor beginning fall 2024. Santa Clara University is a highly ranked Jesuit, Catholic university with an ACS-approved undergraduate program and is located in the Silicon Valley. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate the ability to teach chemistry effectively to a diverse student body, establish an externally funded and productive undergraduate research program in computational  chemistry, computational biochemistry, or cheminformatics (broadly defined), contribute to departmental research and teaching objectives, and participate in service-related activities.  We encourage applications from scientists who will establish an active research program involving undergraduate students in predictive modeling, quantum chemistry, molecular simulations, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and/or big data analytics as applied to complex (bio)chemical problems. In silico approaches may be paired with wet lab approaches as well, but are not necessary. 

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely allied field is required, along with a strong commitment to teaching and undergraduate research.

Preferred Qualifications: 
1) Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.
(2) Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduates.

Responsibilities
Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research and service. This is an in-person position. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to:

TEACHING
1. Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair and subdisciplinary expertise.  SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
a. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
b. Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
c. Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.
d. Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
e. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.


2. Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core.  Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.


3. Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.


4. Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.


5. Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.


RESEARCH
1. Setting up a laboratory to perform computational research that will engage undergraduates and lead to sustained publication of results in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
2. Pursuing external funding for individual and departmental research and teaching objectives.

SERVICE
1. Provide effective service to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the College, the University and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, leadership, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.
