Overview:

The Intelligent Systems and Facilities Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated computer scientist to research design and deploy capabilities for next-generation scalable computing configurations and system-of-systems. The successful candidate should have a deep understanding in one or more of the following:

  • Scientific Workflows
  • Microservice Architectures
  • Cloud Architectures
  • Accelerator Programing (e.g. GPU FPGA)
  • System-System Interconnectivity (e.g. Message Brokers)

The Intelligent Systems and Facilities Group addresses the system software challenges for scientific instruments and facilities. The group collaborates with computer computational instrument and domain science experts across the Computer Science and Mathematics Division Oak Ridge National Laboratory other national laboratories and universities to foster the scientific leadership in smart systems instruments and facilities necessary to further both the ORNL and Department of Energy missions. The groups research and development connects scientific instruments and facilities with edge and leadership computing capabilities and provides operational intelligence with machine-in-the-loop feedback. It enables science breakthroughs with autonomous experiments self-driving laboratories smart manufacturing and AI-driven design discovery and evaluation.


The position will be in the Advanced Computing Systems Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas including applied mathematics and computer science experimental computing systems scalable algorithms and systems artificial intelligence and machine learning data management workflow systems analysis and visualization technologies programming systems and environments and system science and engineering.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively contribute to advanced scientific computing ecosystem (ASCE) architecture development used to interconnect HPC edge compute nodes experimental instruments and other data creating devices.
  • Develop frameworks and architectures that support the automation of advanced experiment and data analysis workflows.
  • Participate in requirements gathering procurement and engineering activities for various ORNL compute and data system projects as well as DOE-sponsored vendor research programs.
  • Advise senior leadership on upcoming leadership compute systems edge systems data system designs hybrid ASCE/cloud architectures procurements and deployments.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of interconnected HPC and edge compute platform design projects.
  • Integrate and deploy research in hardware-software design and configurations for heterogeneous large-scale systems.
  • Perform scaling and performance evaluations of modern heterogeneous and extreme-scale high-performance computing systems.
  • Research and develop new capabilities that execute on ORNLs leading data infrastructures.
  • Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers technical papers reports and proposals.
  • Perform service including mentoring participating in conference committees and maintain membership and leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS and 2+ years of exerience or a Ph.D. with relevant research experience. Degree area should be in computer science computer engineering computational science or a related field.
  • Experience creating architectures that interconnect independent systems into an advanced computing ecosystem.
  • Experience in the development and/or implementation of advanced architectures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with creating and/or implementing common open system architectures
  • Experience integrating and utilizing scientific edge compute devices
  • Experience developing and/or implementing cloud architectures and associated technologies
  • Experience with one or more of:
    • Working with compute accelerators heterogeneous nodes and system architectures
    • Hierarchical memory architectures and/or storage class memories
    • High-performance interconnects
    • Heterogeneous system design and deployment
    • Understanding of modern software development practices
    • Understanding of hardware/software interactions
    • Proven ability to analyze propose develop and deploy solutions to existing problems
    • Excellent interpersonal skills oral and written communication skills and strong personal motivation

Special Requirement:

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
