Position Overview

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Biostatistician/Data Scientist.

This position reports to the Manager Discipline Teaching Technicians and works very closely with the Associate Dean Research. The Biostatistician/Data Scientist is located at the Foothills Campus and works 35 hours a week Monday to Friday. The position may occasionally be required to work outside regular hours on an as needed basis. Some travel to the Spy Hill Campus will be necessary.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate interested in applying their biostatistical skills to support a wide range of basic and applied research projects as well as veterinary educational activities. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine encompasses a diversity of fundamental applied and clinical research programs which require biostatistical support.

This position exists to provide expert advanced biostatistical support for undergraduate and graduate students postdocs research staff and faculty members within UCVM for research scholarly and educational activities and to provide statistical support for assessment of outcomes in the various programs of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working with the Associate Dean Research developing strategic and long-range planning of biostatistical to support a variety of research projects within the faculty
  • As the subject matter expert in data science provide biostatistical support and training to principal investigators research staff and trainees
  • Undertake biostatistical consultation and analysis on specific research projects
  • Provide statistical and computational tools for biological- and veterinary clinical-based activities. Lead implementation and train others on the tools as needed
  • Assist in the development and delivery of biostatistics workshops for graduate students postdoctoral researchers and faculty
  • Together with Bioinformatician and/or other subject-matter experts create joint workshops for graduate students postdoctoral researchers and faculty
  • Undertake biostatistical analysis on research and scholarly projects on (which can provide the opportunity for co-authorship on publications)
  • In collaboration with principle investigators contribute to grant planning writing and manuscript preparation (which can provide the opportunity for co-authorship on publications)
  • Liaise with biostatistics groups in other Faculties as well as central computing support at the University of Calgary
  • Provide statistical support analysis reports and presentations for outcomes assessments in UCVM such as for admissions processes and analysis of educational outcomes assessment. Audiences include faculty senior leadership as well as other leaders across other faculties and units
  • Demonstrate communication organization problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Maintain confidentiality adhere to safety regulations and be flexible in providing assistance in other areas as required
  • Interact with facility/service users and lab members in a pleasant and respectful manner when providing assistance
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment
  • Undertake other duties projects and initiatives associated with biostatical support as directed by the Associate Dean Research

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Masters degree in a relevant area of biostatistics is required; PhD preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a recognized research environment is required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in data science (inclusive of time in graduate program) is required
  • Experience publishing scholarly materials is preferred
  • Postdoctoral experience is considered an asset
  • Expert understanding of concepts and principles of biomedical and clinical research is required
  • Expert coding proficiency eg. R STATA or SAS is required
  • Advanced ability to use common statistical software such as R SPSS Graphpad STATA and/or SAS is required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to facilitate interaction with scientists working in various disciplines (fluency in English is necessary) are required
  • Demonstrable experience excelling at independent work and as part of a team is required
  • Excellent organizational project management and interpersonal skills are required
  • Excellent time management skills are required
