Your Opportunity

The Innovation Office’s Digital Technology & Innovation (DTI) team has a job opening for an individual to serve as a Computational Designer. This position is part of the Design/Delivery Technology group as part of the DTI team, and will help lead the firm’s digital transformation in design automation, computational design strategies, and BIM technologies by providing guidance, technological vision, and solution development. This group specifically utilizes visual scripting to apply computational strategies to the design process across our architecture, engineering, and science disciplines, and specializes in BIM, CAD, and digital twin technology from a design/delivery perspective. This position is for a person who has demonstrated excellence in computational design capabilities, is experienced in design/delivery technologies, and enjoys framing a problem, shaping & creating solutions, and helping to champion implementation. As a member of the Innovation Office, DTI’s Design/Delivery Technology group also engages in research & development and provides guidance and oversight as a center of excellence for the business. This includes engaging in new product research & testing and the incubation of design automation, digital twin, and BIM-related ideas that arise from around the company.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record in the field of computational design technology and will serve the entire company as a member of the Innovation Office’s Digital Technology & Innovation team.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Working on the cutting edge of BIM & computation, solving design and process challenges using BIM applications and computational design modeling plug-ins such as Autodesk Revit/Civil3D and Dynamo, Rhino and Grasshopper, Bentley applications and Generative Components, and other associated digital tools and code languages such as Python.

  • Working knowledge of C#, Autodesk add-in development, and Python libraries like Pandas, SciPy, and NumPy would be considered an asset.

  • Creating computational solutions to complex architecture, engineering, and environmental science problems via visual programming.

  • Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible and easy-to-understand manner.

  • Display excellent interpersonal skills to build quality relationships with the team and across the organization.

  • Assist on initiatives and efforts, as part of a collaborative team, with your BIM, CAD, and computational design expertise.

  • Stay abreast of the latest developments and advancements, including new and emerging technologies & best practices and new tools & software applications impacting digital design – and how they could impact Stantec.

  • Assist with the development of documentation, standards, best practices, and workflows for design/delivery hardware/software in use across the business.

  • Present periodic DTI TechTalk (internal company) webinars throughout the year on the topic of design/delivery technology, and assist with presenting externally as needed.

  • Other miscellaneous tasks associated with being a member of the Digital Technology & Innovation team and tasks.

  • Working knowledge of C#, Autodesk add-in development, and Python libraries like Pandas, SciPy, and NumPy would be considered an asset.

  • Ability to assist with executing highly complex or specialized projects.

  • Attention to detail, never letting important details slip through the cracks or derail a project.

  • Be able to tell the story of how design/delivery solutions are positively impacting stakeholders.

  • Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, and manage time and competing priorities.

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to a variety of interactions with coworkers, clients, one’s supervisor, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Computational Design, or a related field with a focus on BIM, CAD, and computational design technologies.

Minimum of 3 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Master’s Degree would be considered an asset

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
