Overview: 

 

The Quantum Computational Science Group within the Quantum Information Science (QIS) Section is currently seeking applications for a senior research scientist in quantum computing  Our QIS section focuses on foundational quantum theory and experiment in the areas of quantum computing, quantum networking, and quantum sensing.  We apply our expertise to address national priorities in energy, security, and scientific discovery. In this position you will initiate and lead research efforts involving teams of ORNL researchers and external collaborators, using your deep expertise and broad perspective to drive the field of quantum computing forward.  You will advance the theory of quantum computing and/or develop and demonstrate quantum algorithms addressing computing challenges within the mission of the DOE Office of Science.  You will leverage ORNL’s world-class computational facilities and unique multidisciplinary collaborative environment where domain scientists from condensed matter, nuclear, and high energy physics work together with applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and quantum information researchers with the goal of advancing the cutting-edge research in scientific computing.  

 

We are looking for a motivated self-starter with excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work independently within a fast-paced collaborative research environment, be able to set priorities and accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and able to adapt to changing needs.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

  • Develop and execute a research agenda addressing an important topic area in quantum computing
  • Propose and lead medium size R&D projects (roughly $300K-$1M/year)
  • Develop collaborations with research groups within and outside ORNL
  • Regularly report progress and results to collaborators, sponsors, and the broader scientific community via peer-reviewed technical articles, conference presentations, and technical reports.
  • Represent ORNL as a subject matter expert
  • Promote the development of junior researchers through scientific leadership and guidance
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications:

 

  • A Ph.D. in physics, computer science, computer engineering, or a related discipline  with specialization in quantum computer science
  • A minimum of 6 years R&D experience in quantum computing theory and/or algorithms.
  • A demonstrated record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 10 or more years of R&D experience in quantum computing theory and/or algorithms.
  • Experience proposing and managing successful multi-institution projects
  • Familiarity with the US quantum computing funding landscape
  • Familiarity with the DOE national laboratory system
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey key scientific truths to general audiences
