Job Description:
Senior R&D Engineer - Computational Geometry
Alloy Enterprises is developing a new way to manufacture complex aluminum parts. The 25-person team is creating novel materials, hardware, and software to commercialize their manufacturing process. Founded in early 2020, the company is venture-backed and has contracts with the National Science Foundation, the United States Air Force, and commercial customers.
We are seeking a highly skilled Computational Geometry expert with experience in developing algorithms for advanced manufacturing. A successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing novel computational geometry algorithms to optimize 3D fabrication processes and improve the accuracy, speed, and geometric feature-set of Alloy’s process. Strong communication, flexibility, and the desire to “wear many hats'' will all be essential skills for any successful applicant. You will be joining a team of startup veterans who are no strangers to hard tech
What you will do:
- Design and develop novel algorithms to optimize 3D fabrication processes and support removal
- Conduct research and development on numerical methods for simulating and optimizing processes
- Collaborate with hardware, process, and software teams to prototype algorithms, refine them, and finally bring them into production
- Work on our CAD, CAM, motion planning, and slicing software in a production code environment
- Analyze and optimize the performance of 3D algorithms by building models, performing simulations, and running experiments to validate results
- Stay up-to-date with the latest research and trends in 3D printing, diffusion bonding, and computational geometry
- Work with an interdisciplinary team of software, mechanical, materials process, product, and applications engineers to push the envelope of what is possible
About You
- Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment with a bias towards action
- Able to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term focus on details
- PhD or Master's degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related field
- 5+ years of industry experience building, testing, and shipping high quality production code
- 2+ years of experience with computational geometry
- Proud to put your name on the things that you make
Preferred skills:
- Strong background in computational geometry, numerical analysis, and optimization
- Proficient with C/C++, and familiar with or willing to learn Python
- Experience working in a relevant industry such as CAD, CAM, additive manufacturing, 3D inspection, or robotics
- Previous experience using a geometric modeling kernel such as Parasolid or CGAL
- Comfortable implementing algorithms and approaches from literature
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Benefits (for full-time employees):
- Unlimited PTO, 9 company holidays, and a shutdown around the holidays
- Medical, dental, and vision including dependency coverage
